4th of July Ice Cream Social
Grover Cleveland Birthplace

Caldwell native President Grover Cleveland was a robust man who preferred plain foods despite the opulent Victorian foods that made up the customary menu for state functions while he was president. He was once overheard commenting that he would prefer corned beef and cabbage to rich, multi-course meal on the table in front of him and he complained, 'I must go to dinner. I wish it was to eat a pickled herring, Swiss cheese and a chop at Louis' instead of the French stuff I shall find.'

At the Grover Cleveland Birthplace we don't know for sure what Cleveland preferred for dessert, but a reputed favorite dessert food was the Snickerdoodle, a type of sugar cookie popular in that era. We like Snickerdoodles, but discovered that there are many different recipes for this delightful cookie. The Grover Cleveland Birthplace Memorial Association has decided to find the best Snickerdoodle recipe through a Snickerdoodle Bakeoff to be held on the 4th of July at our Annual Ice Cream Social at the Grover Cleveland Birthplace.
